Real world experience always beats classroom theory. Coming from a business owner perspective.

Does that mean that you are guaranteed a job just because you served in the military and have relevant experience? Hardly.

The job should go to the best qualified applicant. However, some people hire people for different reasons. There are a lot of lousy employers in the workplace.

The best way to guarantee you have a job is to have a YOB. Your Own Business.

If you spend your time hiring other people – having first focused on how to employ other people – then you’ll never have to worry about having a paycheck yourself. Even better, multiple income streams.

Nothing guarantees you a job. My ex-husband was a heavy equipment operator in the Army. He did his four years and got out. He had a very hard time finding steady work so he went back in.
Are you totally sure about the college credit thing? I have never heard of that one. But it’s been along time since I was an Army wife. It just doesn’t sound right to me.

While military training is no guarantee of civilian employment, it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Once you have your 15 credits, you can join the Army as a heavy equipment mechanic and also participate in the Army Apprenticeship Program. You will keep a log of all the work and training you receive, signed off buy your supervisors. That way, when you finally separate from the Army, you will have a record of everything you have learned and done and it will be a valuable tool in securing employment.

A friend of mine had to take a job as a heavy duty mechanic with the company he works for due to the fact there was no one else to do the job, had worked for the company as a heavy duty mechanic in the past, and he had the experience from his military days. The company has slots for 3 heavy duty mechanics, currently only 2 are filled, one by my friend the other by a guy who is willing to learn.

My friend was told he would only have to work as a heavy duty mechanic for 30 days then could go back to his other (higher paying) job….that was 2 years ago. The applicants that came in were in no way trained, some had never even worked on their own cars.

So get your experience, build up your own tool supply, this company requires you have your own tools, and get ready to work hard. Of course it isn’t guaranteed, but learn good work habits and most likely you won’t have much trouble at all getting the job you are looking for.
