Ask your Mechanic for quotation for his service before making the appointment with the Vendor
AAA has garages in larger cities where you can take vehicles for inspection. Last time I did that, it cost about $135 (this was years ago).
Go on the AAA website and find out where a facility is near you, or call them.
If the current owner is sure that the car is in the condition that he says it is you should be able to take it to the shop of YOUR choice and have an inspection done, some shops will do a simple buyers inspection free, either way, it will most likely be the buyer that pay’s for the inspection and that should be anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00.

This will depend more on first off if the owner of the car will let you take it to a mechanic? Not that the car is a POS but more likely they wont trust you to drive their car with out putting down the payment, then letting you get it checked out.
This is how i would go about doing this. I would find a place you trust. Then speak with the owner of the car and arrange for them to drop the car off at the shop, and have it checked out. Make sure to call the shop up and let them know what you would like them to do and they should be fine with that. They will charge you a fee shouldn’t be to expensive and someone will have to eat that cost.
I would also suggest you get a car fax report, and if you sweet talk the mechanic you can get them to come out to the car if your lucky, it all depends on what the owner of the car wants to do.
