The Cash for Clunker program certainly took a lot of potential repairs off the market, that’s for sure. While a couple of car manufacturers are on the verge of failing, not all of them are. People are still buying cars and will always need them serviced and repaired.
If no new cars were sold, people would need their old cars maintained. If all old cars were taken off the road, they would be replaced by new ones that are getting harder for non-mechanics to repair.
Either way, mechanics will always be in demand. It is a secure career for a person with the proper skills.
