The Cash for Clunker program certainly took a lot of potential repairs off the market, that’s for sure. I personally believe the auto industry will survive – Ford, for one, seems to be doing fine – but rather than the auto industry concerns, the overall economy, financial institutions, the housing market and unemployment figures seem to be the primary concerns for almost all of the industries.
People will always have to commute – they may be putting off minor repairs for a while, but the break downs and serious work will continue to provide work for the auto technicians.

While a couple of car manufacturers are on the verge of failing, not all of them are. People are still buying cars and will always need them serviced and repaired.

If no new cars were sold, people would need their old cars maintained. If all old cars were taken off the road, they would be replaced by new ones that are getting harder for non-mechanics to repair.

Either way, mechanics will always be in demand. It is a secure career for a person with the proper skills.
