With todays cars the days of the all around mechanic is about over. everything is computerized. If I was young and wanted to get started again I would specialize in one thing and try to learn it very well. You can still know the basics of the way a vehicle works and work on other things too but one man can’t learn it all anymore. Learn something real well Like heating and air, front suspension and brakes, computerized engine controls…. transmitions…. the list goes on and on. but if you tried to be good at everything you wouldn’t have time to work on a car. you’ld be in school all the time.

If you just want to learn about cars, then read a book. don’t waste your time and money taking classes. I started out in high school with Basic Auto, then Vocational Auto, then Advanced Vocational Auto, then to a community college to participate in GM’s ASEP, Automotive Service Educational Program. It’s a specialised program centered around training GM dealership service technicians. I wish I would have listened to my grandma and went back to school for something better. I lucked out and landed an awesome job with Delphi, a leading automotive original equipment supplier to GM and other car makers.

i’ve been in automotive school for 3 years, i learned alot hands-on,, but also in classroom reading books, and the best one so far i’ve read is named “automotive technology, a systems approach 4th edition” by jack erjavec… it’s the best out there, u can get it for no more than 100 bucks, i know it sounds like alot, but trust me it’s worth every penny,, it teaches u from basics to normal shop talk… u can learn alot from it… good luck
