A lot of companies that do trucking have a “fleet” mechanic that works on the company trucks. I work for a company that transports cars on the east coast and we have a diesel guy that works only on our trucks. There are other full service truck shops like a regular garage also. A fleet mechanic will be more familiar with the trucks from working on the same ones over and over which can be an advantage.

Overall its heavy work at times but if you do services its easy on most rigs. Some of the stuff like drum brakes are made simpler but the drum weighs 90 pounds.

If you really want to find out what its all about find a diesel guy and talk to him about it.

    Good luck

Forgot to say that a top diesel guy in the northeast can make $30/hr or so, depending on ability and experience.
