    Totally unrelated.

No it is not a good idea

A car mechanic repairs/maintains equipment that has been designed by a mechanical engineer. So the former can be described as a technician and the latter as a true engineer. People who wear overalls, whilst doing a very valuable job are not strictly engineers, engineers carry out design, perform calculations and resolve problems before they ever get to a car mechanic.

It is okay to do this as long as it doesn’t keep you from taking all the math and science you can and doing well.

The extra class I took in high school was drafting. It served me well along the way.

Knowing how to take mechanical things apart and put them back together can be helpful for an engineer if only to appreciate the problems maintenance people can face.

Take math and science and math and science.

Working on cars should be done in your spare time, for fun, as a hobby. Will working on cars help? Maybe – many mechanical engineers have difficulty transferring their knowledge into the real world. But a mechanic or a designed is NOT NOT NOT an engineer. They are very different, although sometimes people don’t understand the differences.

Some mechanical engineers I know couldn’t operate a screwdriver. But they make $150,000 a year and are great at what they do.

It may also help to understand what an engineer does, it will save you alot of time and frustration in the future.
