when you have completed your “Basic training”go to work for a reputable marine repair shop .Get about 10 years experience in,then
perhaps you will be able to start up on your own, checking with local
    legislation first.Good Luck.

marine engines are very dif from road engines, a lot more work involved, i do make a good living on them, but i have been doing it now for twenty plus years, you have to learn not only out boards and inboards but every year new modles appear and you need to buy the repair disks for them,

Yes, it can be done. I have a friend who has a mobile marine diesel service business. He does ok for himself. He does just about any service in place. If a re-power is necessary or pulling an engine is necessary, he sub-contracts with a yard to use facilities. He has a cube van with common parts and tools, and a small work bench. He is very busy and is scheduled out for weeks.
