WHERE CAN I FIND A DETAILED GUIDE TO REPLACING A BLOWN HEAD GASKET?

I usually paid for the 2002 mecury swarthy ls from an auction as well as it has the blown conduct gasket. There is no guaranty during all as well as I’m the pennyless college child so no income for the mechanic. The brand new gasket is usually 44$ as well as i get the crux of what needs to be done, though I’d similar to to have the minute beam upon (with cinema if possible) upon EXACTLY what to do in what order.

Buy a shop manual. It will have all the information you will need.

you need to have the head machined, which is taking a very small amount metal off of the head so it is perfectly flat. if you dont do this it will leak with the new head gasket. also you need a torque wrench to tighten the head bolts to a specified ft. lb. measurement and you will need new head bolts. this is the least you should do.

is it a v6? dont matter anyway, ive got a book and a scanner, email me and ill hook you up. reason i asked is i just done a 98 v6 still in the shop runs great, but had to do it twice, heads were borderline, can you guess wat side of the border lol. its for sale btw.
also your gonna need gasket kit not just head gasket if its a v6, youll need intake(lower) gasket and that is not reusable, everything but the lower intake and head are.upper intake is arguably not reusable, but will work.

Chilton and Haynes both print complete repair manuals for the different car models. Your local auto parts store should have one or both brands. I have a library of them that covers every car I have ever owned. (and some for family member and friend’s cars I’ve worked on.)

The repair (shop) manuals from Ford Motor are designed for an experienced mechanic. They just say what to remove and not where it is nor how to remove it.

Chilton and Haynes are written for the backyard mechanic and so give step by step instructions with pictures. The thing to read carefully is the sequence for loosening and tightening the head bolts as doing that step wrong will warp and destroy the head(s). Make sure you also have the required tools handy and know how to use them. All of the bolts will need to be torqued with a torque wrench when you put it back together. Failure to do this will at best cause the new head gasket to leak and worst case destroy the expensive head. The tool salesman can show you how to set and use a torque wrench when you buy it.

You want the one for Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable 1996 – 2005. The 2 cars are the same just with different name plates.

I suggest you purchase a Haynes Repair Manual for the 1996 thru 2005 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. Haynes Repair Manuals are sold at most parts stores. It will have all the detailed instruction you need and lots of photos. See it here:

BTW, I suggest you do both heads and be sure you have the heads reconditioned by a reputable machine shop. Reconditioning typically includes hot tank cleaning, magnaflux check for cracks, resurface the heads, resurface the valves & valve seats, knurl and ream the valve guides to proper lash, and replace the valve seals. The cost for reconditioning a pair of heads will typically cost $150 to $180 and is the best insurance against having to redo the job again.
